Default A new starting problem 75CDT saloon 2002

HELP.

Got a different starting problem, all electrics working, but when glow plugs warning has gone out, turn key to start, just clicks. Anybody any idea what the cause is. Don't know about diesels sadly, but guessing its a starter motor issue ??

Default Starting

Do the headlights flash when it refuses to start? Does is occur when engine is both cold and hot? It is worth checking and cleaning where the battery cable connects to the starter and the earth cable where it connects to the chassis. The glow plugs are not needed on our diesels at our temperatures so operate the starter straight away when you turn on because, if it is a battery problem, the high current used for the glow plugs might be the last straw for it. Diesels need a good battery to start in the colder weather. If it starts using jump leads then it would appear to be a battery/Alternator problem.

Get someone to turn the key while you tap the starter with something metallic. If the cars starts, then you need a solenoid kit . About £12 from ebay innit.

Sounds like the battery is shot to me. Try another battery if you can.

Default Non start

BATTERY itself or the Alternator is not charging it . None of the things which you mention are working fine take anywhere near what the starter needs in cold weather. Does it start using jump leads?

Try booster battery before anything else - simply cos its easier (Neutral on block not battery), but agree with James in that it could be Solenoid/Starter problem. If battery, get alternator output checked before getting new battery.

Worth checking the power and earth cable connections are clean and tight. A series of clicks and the lights flashing then check the battery. A single click then check for worn solenoid contacts.
