Default Spark Plugs

I replaced my spark plugs at the weekend & the difference is marked. I had been getting a certain amount of stuttering on pulling away at the bottom of a gear which had slowly gotten worse, so l bought some of the OEM plugs from Rimmer's. Around £40 all in which is more than l usually pay for plugs but l wanted to try them out. They arrived very shortly before a week's holiday in Devon but l didn't have a deep enough socket to get them out at home & l didn't have time to visit my workshop before we went away so the old NGK's stayed in for the holiday & l just kept the rev's up to keep the stuttering at bay. So after a lovely & very welcome break starting on the day the caravan site & the pubs opened, l got up to my workshop & did the job on Saturday.
You do tend to forget about plugs sometimes but the immediate difference in tickover & exhaust note was very pleasing & taking her back on the road a mini-revelation. She pulls smoothly from the bottom of any gear now & barrels along the motorways & carriageways like a new car. I did put those NGK's in new but don't recall such a marked improvement in performance. Saying that though, they had suffered from a leaking cam cover gasket, since replaced & the rear plug was covered in oil so they had deteriorated somewhat. Still, l must say l'm impressed by the new plugs whatever make they are, no manufacturer stamp being apparent on them. The electrode tip is very slender compared to the NGK items but l have no understanding of the difference in construction, l simply gapped them to 1mm, put them in & am very much enjoying their effect on my 75. Marvellous.

After some miles I actually still had a certain amount of stuttering so l bit the bullet & bought new coil packs & leads which has all but eliminated it completely. I still do have the occasional hiccup when putting power back on at the bottom of a gear & l'm wondering if it could be a mild fuel delivery niggle. I do have the orange clip fitted.
It is very mild & power delivery on the whole is smooth & reassuring.

Try gapping the plugs to .75mm

Ah, right. I thought 1mm was correct for the n/a 1.8 but l'll give it a whirl.

Let us know whether it works. I recently had similar and changed plugs, reduced gap to 0.8, cleaned cam position sensor and put redex in the tank. Problem solved, but not sure whether it was the smaller gap, or one of the other things.

I will. I'm fitting my new Klarius backbox in a while so l should have time to gap the plugs & test them on the way home from my workshop.

Now my exhaust is sorted l could give some attention to the performance of the plugs. A twenty five mile journey to work later & the .75mm gap seems to have pretty much sorted the few hiccups that were left after the plug, lead & pack replacements. Is it plug brand dependant between the .75 & 1mm gap for the 1.8 n/a then.
I might like to try cleaning the cam position sensor. I take it it's a fairly straightforward job, wherever it is.

Whip off the plastic cover on top of the engine and the cam sensor is on the RH side at the front, 8mm socket and lever out with a small flat screwdriver
