I am amazed Paul, even in Manchester! With no low speed fan I would expect the temperature to rise above 100 degrees and for the conditioned air to become decidedly warm.

No it doesn't. Your plan is spot-on; renew the worn brushes (buy only directly from Engineering Carbon Products Ltd) and the resistor on your 2 speed system.
