They still cost money to maintain.

It just so happens more Rover/MG owners are prepared to do the work themselves than go to a garage.

If I added up all my free time spent on fixing bits and bobs as a garage labour rate, it would be cheaper to have a new car probably!

Some people here did not pay these cars "cheap". Some were paid for their good value back in the day.
They were however better priced than other comparable (if I dare use the word) cars back then ...

Fortune favours the brave? Strangely people always comment favourably on the car on forecourts and then look nervous. Things break on all cars so a low starting price is an advantage. Love mine though would have paid more!

That all makes sense, I still get looks of appreciation when out in the car, in fact a local farmer/transport haulier who drives the very latest rolls, said to me in the village, "nice car Mike, I would drive that" praise indeed!!

the truth ?
because the Rover name is a joke, associated with bad managment, poor reliability and alan partridge..
and often thought of as an O.A.P.s car..

these thoughts are what i think the general public think.. not nesseceraly my thoughts..
chreers rob

The 260 is probably the best car I've owned and now at 135,000 miles (I've had it since 6,000) and it's still in great condition. I had a 5 series a few years ago and when I sold it at 140,000 miles it was falling apart!

I think 260 prices are starting to edge upwards as word gets out how great they are from a low point about a year ago.

The real problem with the BMW/Audi's is you never feel far from a £5,000 bill, when I had a diesel 3 series in the late 90's it developed a faulty fuel pump, I was quoted £1,200 + VAT + Fitting on exchange!!! For a fuel pump!!!!

Recently a fried of mine had a faulty injector on an A4 2.0 diesel over £600 to fix!!!

Yes things can go wrong with any car, but for £5,000 I could import a brand new engine from the US for the 260, which would probably have an "interesting" specification (if you know what I mean).

When there's hardly any left, that's when people will start to appreciate them.
