Question With the advent of modern technology...

...how is it that CEEFAX looks exactly the same as it did in the 'eighties? Is this deliberate? Just seems odd to me!

Good idea, stood the test of time (early 80s?) but maybe no more after next year. :xmas-smiley-014:

It isn't like that, unless you are maybe still on the analogue system. The digital teletext system is much more colourful and higher resolution.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

As of August 2011 two thirds of UK TV regions have completed or in the process of being switched over.

Ceefax is the last remaining text service available via analogue TV transmissions in the UK, as ITV and Channel 4's Teletext service closed in December 2009. Channel 5's "five text" ancillary service closed in 2011. However, a limited analogue teletext service through ITV and Channel 4 is still available through terrestrial.
Not gonna be around much longer though Loved playing Bamboozle on Teletext.

The actual Ceefax system uses characters generated inside your TV, all that is transmitted is a signal telling the Ceefax electronics in your TV, which character to put where on the screen and which clour to use. So that was the system you were rather stuck with.

My first Teletext adaptor was an ex-BBC prototype, with an ASKII keyboard, which I managed to get going and couple up to an TV set. The next one was the size of a large video recorder, but at least it had a basic remote control to operate it. Its ability to actually receive and decode the data was terrible.
