Gearbox removal questions

QUESTION 1

KV6

Rave's method for removing the manual gearbox says "Remove starter motor" (page 707, repairs section 37-13).

I seem to remember someone saying it wasn't necessary to take the starter motor off in order to get the box out. Can someone tell me if that's true?

QUESTION 2

Rave says release the gear change cables using a special tool.

I don't have tool 18G 1592, or the metal to make anything like it - can I just lever them off with a pair of flat screwdrivers or prybars?

Clutch pipe quick release connector.

Is there any way of getting this darned thing apart without the special tool?

I did my clutch at the weekend on an 1800 zt.
Question 2 I used a 13mm open ended ring spanner And levered up gently
Question 3 clutch pipe quick connection I just gripped the gold part with one hand and pulled the brown part back and forward till it came apart.

Q2 - I'll try the 13mm open ended.

Q3 - I assume you mean the gold part is the slim piece on the right in the above pic and the brown part is the wide piece on the left. I'll try that too. What about fluid spillage though - do I need to empty the master cylinder somehow?

They fitted the quick release so that nothing spilled - it shuts off when disconnected.

A suitable sized spanner works to release the coupling on the slave cylinder (17mm comes to mind but don't quote me, its been a couple of Months since I did it)

Hi Simon.

Q2 - Use bull nosed pliers they will do the job nicely, prong either side and lever.

Q3 to break/split the connector use a slim 17mm open ended spanner.

If you don't have one of these.
