Fuse 36 is for the battery alarm and the immobilizer, it gives the exact symptoms that Simon described.........well in my case it did

Turned out the problem was problem between key and seat. I had serviced the car a couple of days before, when I did I removed the battery to clean out under it, when I replaced it I thought I had tightened up the battery terminals, I didn't. Negative was arcing and that caused it to fail. Took battery off for a few minutes, reconnected and hit unlock on the fob 5 times quickly and it all works again.

Moral of story guys, check your nuts.
