Thinking of a DSLR Canon EOS 1000D
My trusty Olympus digi compact is getting a bit long in the tooth, and I am intending to get a digital SLR.
I have used SLRs for a long time (Pentax ME Super) for which we had loads of toys, but haven't used it for around 10 years. Having done a round of the market, I was thinking of the Canon EOS 1000D, which will do all that I require of it, and will give me access to the Canon range of lenses and accessories. Anyone have any experience of this camera? Any experiences would be appreciated. Thanks |

Not used a Cannon since my college days, but they are very mainsteam in photography. I don't know about the specifics but in genreal I would say Cannon or Nikkon are the main ones to go for unless you're after something specialised. From what I've read they typically have a decent sized sensor so the noise/grain is kept low and lenses aren't too expensive (unless you go for the real pro stuff).
Thinking back to my college days - I wouldn't mind getting the old Bronica out again! Film photographs retain more magic than digital somehow.

The 1000D is the entry level Canon which will take all EFS and EF lenses. It is a great starter camera body which maybe "all you need" or the beginning of a progression to "more advanced" bodies.
The body will be very capable but the deciding factor is nearly always the lens you use. I have a 30D and 5D with 17-40L, 24-105L and Sigma 120-400 lenses. My wife has a 400D with a sigma 18-200mmOS lens. If you want an all purpose lens I would recommend the Sigma 18-200mm OS lens as it gives great results at a budget price. |

Thanks Gents.
I understand the 1000D is effectively a de-specced 450D, but this is far more expensive and has features I don't think I would ever use. The sensor is the same as the higher spec bodies, so I still think this is the one for me. I have had a play in Jessops and think it is okay. It only will remain for me to shop around for the best deal. Colin, Still remember your garden shots last year from Biggin Hill. Top Gun!! Kind Regards EnEnGee |

I've not used the 18-200, but I'd at least consider a 18-50 with a constant f/2.8 aperture (all the 3rd party companies make them), you may find you need the extra light more than you need a 200mm focal length :-)

The slippery slope of photography lol I started with a 400d then progressed to a 1dmk11n. I think you will enjoy the 1000d

Canon and Nikon are pretty much on a par with each other but being a Canon man for 30 years I'm a little biased.
The 1000D is an excellent camera and as indicated above, the lens choice is immense not just Canon lenses but third party like Sigma, Tamron etc. The sensor is smaller than a normal film camera but that means that the lenses can be made very compact so it's ideal for carrying around. My older D60 (6 Mp sensor) was £2000 when I bought it a few years ago so it really shows how far DSLR's have come on. |

Once you have made the decision this could be useful -
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet?_rdc=1 Have bought two or three bits from there and the stuff has always turned up quickly and in perfect (as new) condition. But for brand new you could look at this as a help http://www.prudentpanda.co.uk/c7/pho...est-price.html |

Can't go wrong with a Canon. I've had a AE1P for 30 years and it works perfectly. Also got the 550D which is a superb camera and takes good 1080HD to boot. You will not be disappointed.
