Just acquired 'Big Mo' from Rick Sta. Comprehensively documented on the forum she's in lovely condition (and plenty of cool lighting too)
I always fancied an MG 190SE tourer and was tempted despite a mileage of almost 140k. Testimony to Rick's brand of TLC
Very happy with the package and only planning maybe 3-4k per annum. Nevertheless, since it's mighty close to the upper limit apparently for a V6, I'd welcome suggestions on preventive maintenance and what to watch out for going forwards to make sure she's around for a long time.
It's more fun than buying a new equivalent saloon car and dropping 5k as soon as you leave the showroom and 15k in the first two years. £15k depreciation would buy my entire current fleet of four oldies but goodies.
Seems I may need to add a nice diesel 75 Connoisseur to complete the collection.

I had my entire suspension overhauled in December 2019 by a MG/Rover specialist , worth every penny, I realised at the time on 318000 miles it was worn out and needed an upgrade it was not too dear either in my opinion, all was replaced except rear suspension arms as those were both done in 2018, the rest in December a shade under £700, my god it was like driving a brand new Rover 75 and not a sound over any bumps.. beautiful.

my new car loses around £600 per month, each month that's nuts... my new Rover 75 suspension has lost no ground since fitting, shes still only worth £4.50 so who cares.....where else can you drive a depreciation free car NO WHERE
LONG LIVE THE ROVER 75 DRIVERS AND THEIR CARS

I want to see them on the roads..just like the London route master bus years after production completion THEY ARE BUILT TO LAST!!
and great to look at.

Rare as hens teeth here in ireland. Probably to do with the road tax of 710 euros for the 2 litre diesel and dodgy clutch system. I have paid this since 2008. so paid a fair amount of tax over the years. My missus has a volvo xc60, Had no more than 40mpg maximum out of it, but road tax is 270 euros!

The volvo's look solid and are , but the r75 definately has heavier doors and bonnet and better paint work.
I only see a r75 or mg zt every 2 weeks or so and I travel about 15-20k a year.

Whenever I think about replacing with a newer car some I have driven are so disappointing, kia stonic(terrible handling, gutless engine), ford focus(suspension desperate,tiny boot), xc60 is actually a nice motor, just the mpg is rubbish.

Everything said makes sense!

I too have lost a fortune over the years buying new cars and trading them in 2 years later.

I think what puts most people off keeping these lovely old cars, or any other old cars for that matter is the problem of it being written off in the blink of an eye. Most are reluctant to invest money into a car that an insurance would scrap if it was hit by a shopping trolley in a supermarket car park.

People feel safer knowing their new(ish) car would be repaired in the event of a minor bump. Plus, there is the convenience side of things. Your newish car gets bumped, you phone your insurance company. Someone takes yours away, leaves you a courtesy car until yours is brought back as good as new, it's easy!

Having a car written off is a PITA, I know only too well as it's just happened to us when my wife's Suzuki splash was was under water just 3 weeks ago in a flash flood. You have to start trawling the internet to find a suitable replacement, it's been quite stressful I can tell you.

As for me, if and when my Rover needs new bits, or work it will get them. As long as nothing catastrophic happens to it, I will keep it running as long as possible. I am no stranger to the battle of keeping old vehicles running, motorbikes in my case. It's sad that we have just lost marinabrian from the forum, people like him have kept so many of these cars from an early death. I am fortunate in the fact that I live about 3 miles from BigRuss, another guy who's knowledge is absolutely amazing!

And why would I put myself through this? Why not bail out now? Simply because I have not driven any car that makes me smile as much as my Rover. I have not been in any car before that gets the senses going like my Rover. The whiff of leather, the old sideboard look that takes me back to my childhood. Sad NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- or what lol

Basically, it's priceless!!!

My wife and I both have 75 Diesel Tourers . mine is an 02 plate in Wedgewood with 98000 on the clock, her's is an 03 plate in gold with 89000.


Mine is my second one - the previous one was an 04 plate that was written off by a disabled driver in a brand new motability car who jumped a red light. She hit me at 40mph front N/S. I drove away from the crash (although I knew the insurers would write it off) .. her 3 month old Nissan had one wheel off the ground and looked like a tank had run over the front of it. Insurance paid up more for mine than I paid for it 4 years earliier and the replacement had less miles on it and cost me less than the insurance pay out I got ... I reckon over 40,000 miles outside of consumables it cost me less than 3p a mile to run .. what else would give that sort of motoring cost ?



We love them both .. they are not immaculate but practical daily drivers that do about 8k a year. Rarely let us down - had to do her front suspension last year - £300 and the aircon £200 but I have a superb independent mechanic who understands our affinity with them and whilst the money we invest in them doesn't make them worth any more what else can you get for this sort of money that has leather, walnut, aircon, cruise control, etc. etc. and still drives like a car half its age ?


I keep getting kids in hot hatches tailgating and I sometimes wish I had a V6 under the bonnet but I get 38 mpg so I just let them pass and sit back in my motorised armchair ... can't ask for more really ?


Who knows what will eventually replace it .. a Mobility scooter ?
