If I recall correctly back in 1970 an 11 sqn lightning on QRA also held the record for the greatest number of Russian Bear and Badger bombers intercepted in 1 sortie -- 80 of them in mixed formations coming around the North Cape. Bet that was a brown trouser job when he picked that lot up on his radar

Question

The U2 pilots don the same suit as the crew of the space shuttle, is that correct?

All this talk of Lightning’s, we took the dogs for a walk around the air museum at Flixton this morning (Seeing as the weather was too bad to go anywhere else!)

I was taken to the Farnborough air show when I was about 10 and watched a squadron of three Electric Lightnings performing for the huge crowd. I seem to recollect they had taken off from Lossiemouth yet were with us in less than thirty minutes over the field. This was very hard for me to process at the time when I was told that was about 500 miles.
Two more things seriously impressed me. As they flew past, almost silently floating by, I thought how quiet they were, and then just after that thought, the ear splitting roar as the sound arrived after the squadron had left. Incredible and never forgotten. I think that manoeuvre is now banned unfortunately. On the return flypast (just as fast), we were told they would now climb to 50,000 feet. They just stood on their tails and went through the cloud cover vertically, which being quite low cloud on the day, they vanished in seconds. I dreamed of being a fighter pilot for many years after that.
Castle Motors just west of Plymouth on the A38 has one of these amazing machines on display in their car courtyard. Lots of nice overpriced cars there to ogle as well as the plane.

Looking at Lightning's always reminds me of Taffy Holden's remarkable accidental flight

Best told in his own words.

Default Lincolnshire

We grew up with 111 Squadron Lightnings at RAF Leuchars. When on my annual jaunts to Lincolnshire came across an original 111 Squadron Lightning at Tattershall Thorpe.
They were awesome machines.

The small museum here is well worth a visit.

LOL I bet he could get up to intercept a Russian bomber quicker than a RAF Tempest.

Seen a couple of folland gnats in last week. It’s good to remember when we used to design and manufacture our own aircraft.
