Hi guys, need some help. On way home last night the engine management light came on. This occurred a few weeks ago and a relay was discovered faulty, so replaced. On inspection this morning I noticed a white powder as seen in photo's. Also very little water in radiator, so topped up. No leaks can be seen. Engine did not overheat. I swapped the relays around but no change and light stayed on. Any help is appreciated.
Car photo not the MG.

The EML is probably something emissions related. Do you have access to an OBD2 scanner (or T4 or TOAF)?

The white powder on top of the expansion tank looks like dried coolant, this can often occur from from a leaky cap as the seals flatten with age. You can either replace just the seals: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/rov...6f2c4532&_ss=r

Or the whole cap: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/rov...6f2c4532&_ss=r

Also make sure you are not over filling the header tank, as there will be no expansion if you do.

Another thing to check is do you have an air lock? and also look into the V for coolant deposits or red coolant.

Sorry, me abbreviating stuff unnecessarily. EML = engine management light

You can get a basic OBD2 reader for under £20 on eBay etc. It should be able to read engine management codes (on petrol cars 2002 onwards, diesel 2004 onwards I believe) but not much else. For older cars and communicating with the other modules (e.g. airbags), you'll need something more specialised like T4, TOAF or pscan.

The, what appears to be coolant loss, doesn't look like the usual red/pink deposits to be expected, and may have been changed in the past for another type, the OP may know about this, even so, he could do worse than having the coolant strength checked to be on the safe side.

I agree with the above about correct filling and the cap possibly being the culprit.

I am looking at a Foxwell NT 624 Elite on Ebay. A friend has a Maserati and a Foxwell. We plugged in and its on the emissions side. Code cleared so I will see what happens.
