Default another tyre question

Hi, I want to replace a set of 215/55/16 tyres but have found that the 205/55/16 of same brand is about 30 % cheaper.

Can these be fitted or would it not be recommended?

thanks

Personally I would always stick the the manufacturers recommendation

Assuming it's for a 75 saloon (not a zt 190 or a v8!) then these should be fine. The 75 15" wheels can have 195/65/15 so even narrower tread than your 205 option. What you will find though is that the rolling radius is smaller (causing the speedo to over-read even more than usual) and that 55% of 205 isn't quite as much as 55% of 215 giving less tyre sidewall height (a harder ride). Just don't mix the two sizes at all not even on different axles as the ABS system may well not like different sized wheels front and back.

The difference is only 10mm in width so not much but you do loose some contact with road

At the moment I've got 205/65/15 (fitted by the previous owner) at the front and 195/65/15 (fitted by myself) at the rear (You may guess the latter are cheaper, but far cheaper 50€ vs 75€) and I haven't got the faintest problem with the ABS system.
But it may not pass our MOT (CT) though. Hence next September I'll have 195/65/15 fitted at the front as well.

Put your tyre sizes in here to compare, I make it 1.6% bigger diameter on 205s.

Also useful for finding alternatives.
https://www.oponeo.co.uk/advice-and-...nativeTireTool

Any of the 3 sizes (15" & 16") in the handbook will give a very similar if not identical diameter. Wider tyres give more grip in the dry due to a wider footprint, but are slightly more prone to aquaplaning in standing water for a given vehicle mass. Take your pick

I have 4 tyres available if you are interested. One is virtually new and the other 3 are about 5 to 6mm. All are 215/55/16. Now that I’ve said that I see you are in Meath near Dublin. Hardly close for a collection!

How would your insurance company feel about you changing the size from the manufacturers spec in the event of an accident?
Worth asking.
Heres a quote from Tyre shopper.......
Size:
Stick to the original size recommended by the manufacturer. Are you considering plus sizing your tyres? Read the pros and cons of the move here. But that aside, plus sizing your tyres without informing your insurer may invalidate your insurance. In case of such modification, informing your insurer by phone (or writing) may do the trick. It may result in an increase in premium. But you get to do what you want and still have a valid insurance.

Sounds like a drag racing setup for a front wheel drive car... fat fronts and skinny rears. Any abs problems would only show (if at all) when using the brakes lightly at low speed.

Closest you could get to the same rolling radius would 205/60s
