Default Tracking issues

I’ve had a complete suspension rebuild on my ZZT and tracked it using a tape as my local tame mechanic doesn’t have a tracking setup.
I took the car to a local auto centre that does, they dialed in the fronts and tried with the rears but said they couldn’t get enough adjustment on the passenger rear wheel any ideas why this is the case or how to adjust it into line (it’s +4 degrees and they say it should be 1.3 degrees)

Rust Richard! At the rear a bolt has to be loosened to allow movement to set the toe. You'll need to get out the wire brush and lubricant before taking it back to them.

-1.3 degrees is I think at the maximum end of the adjustment. +4 degrees actually sounds like something is out of shape, but maybe the tourers are different?

T-Cut has posted a chart on here somewhere showing the tracking for all the wheels.

I expect he will be along shortly to give you a guide.

( Unless of course you already have it.--Lol. )

Here's the (final) revision for wheel tracking as defined on Technical Bulletin TB0061(3) 2004.

Not clear what the '1.3 degrees' refers to, but it isn't within the toe or thust angle specs. Remember only the toe (and thereby the thrust angle) is adjustable. All other parameters will be either in or out depending on the state of the suspension. The correct adjuster tool for the trailing arm mounting is MGR No.64-021 or equivalent.

Richard, the rears need to be adjusted before the front, or the car will end up crabbing

Full tank of fuel too, and unless you are not as rough as me, don't use a piece of string to set the rears.............however after 24000 miles since fitting the new upper arms, the rear tyres are wearing evenly

Of course no one has yet mentioned the possibility the the trailing arm front bushes may be clapped..........

Hi Brian

Swing arm bushes are only 4 weeks old came from Rimmers

It turns out the guy doing it was a muppet just hired from Kwik fit!

He didn’t do the rear first but was working round the car. Instead of using the adjusters on the front tie rods he decided to remove the tack gaiter and partially disassemble the inner tie rod to a just it! It rattled like a bag of spanner’s so I took it back to my tame mechanic who discovered the inner tie rod was attached to the rack by one thread on the nut!
Needless to say frank views on workmanship were exchanged over the phone won’t be going back there again even though the offered free tracking as compensation!

Are the figures in the table the same for a ZTT?

Cheers Richard

Sounds like a close call there. Glad it was caught before an accident happened. Good luck with getting it done properly..

Yes, the 75 and ZT Tourer versions have the same specs as saloons.

Thanks very much for posting this Richard. It's a warning to all of us to resist blindly placing our trust (and lives, let's be honest) in people posing as professionals. Choose your garage with the utmost care and trust your instincts. If possible, find out a bit about the subject beforehand so that you can spot those who don't know what they're talking about.

My advice on wheel alignment has always been to avoid the 'fast fit' outfits in favour of Hunter equipped independent businesses which can be found here.
