Default Astronomy tonight - Wednesday

What an interesting array up there tonight, the ISS giving two very clear and bright passes, seen Venus, Jupiter, the Moon and Saturn to then notice, very low, and very very red Mars rising into the sky, great stuff.

We do have the promise of a slow blood red lunar eclipse on Friday, though that may be masked by the promised showers and thunderstorms.

I’ve seen Mars many times but I’ve never ever seen it like it is tonight. It’s blood red and very low in the sky! It looks amazing.

For those interested in seeing the International Space Station passing overhead, have a look here:

https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/

Just type in your nearest large town/city in the search box and it will list the times, the direction to look for it to appear, the highest angle it will reach (relative to the horizon) and the length of time it will be visible.

Mars is extra Red due to a planet wide dust storm that is likely to last several months.
It has already caused, I think it`s Opportunity (Rover) to shut down and into sleep mode.

Looking forward to Friday and a red moon. My favourite subject and although I know very little, enthusiasm abounds. In the news today is info about the lake found on Mars. About two miles across and subterraneous, salt deposits in the lake are apparently what keeps it above freezing. Water on Mars eh, that’s all you need for survival! I wonder if there has ever been any interest or suggestions for a Science sticky on here?

Just checked the weather for Stevenage - which is where I'll be tonight - and it's forecast to be raining. It will be ironic (and S*d's law) if the blood moon coincides with the first cloudy night for two months!

Be careful tonight folks. The last time we were all persuaded to do it the world was invaded by Triffids. Or cuckoos in Midwich.

Just about par for the course, now almost total cloud cover.

No fear for the Triffids, even the dandelions have given up!
