Default Low coolant indicator

I'm still looking for a way to turn on the low coolant indicator on the IPK, it comes on during self test and I've followed the circuit back through the LED driver to one of the processors. I have tried all the inputs to the IPK with no luck so I assume it was intended to operate from the Body Control Unit over the K-Bus or from the ECU over the CAN bus. The car is a 1.8 of course and I've fitted a suitable sensor in the header tank and could just wire it in with something else but where's the fun in that?

I didn't think there was a coolant level indicator, just the overheat one? I'd connect it in parallel with the oil pressure switch in that case as that is designed to accept a simple switched input rather than an analogue signal that the coolant gauge/light would need to activate.

I thought only the diesels had the vestigial sensor.

Interesting. Where is this sensor located as the expansion tank on my diesel doesn't have any kind of sensor fitted?

Am I correct in thinking the same type sensor as used in the screen wash is used in that receptacle in the header tank - followed by a T4 session?

The earlier (black) expansion tanks have a moulded connector underneath. The original plan was to fit a float/reed switch sensor there. The design of the sensor would be similar to that fitted in the screen wash reservoir. However, the obvious experiment has been done and no, it can't be done. If a sensor with a similar output to the washer bottle could be installed, the low wash warning light would be the logical way to display a low coolant. It's my understanding that the HiLine low coolant icon is only pesent in IPKs fitted to diesels. That's why I was surprised that the OP had located one on his 1.8 IPK.
