Sat Nav disc unit
Hi, I know it's a well documented issue that water ingress into the boot is a killer of satnav units, but is there any way back for the units affected, ie can they be refurbished, especially if water isn't the culprit?
I have 2 units, one doesn't work at all, the other one doesn't turn itself off when the car is 'at rest' and was responsible for a flat battery not so long ago. Big Russ very kindly tested one of his units when I went to see him and it worked so I know where the fault lies. I saw Edd China get a refurbished unit for the P38 Range Rover on Wheeler Dealers though the programme was years old, and I thought, 'Hang on,......' Am I barking up a non-existent tree here? Can't answer your refurb question, but as for discs you have to remember our cars are old and up to date discs are not available, as far as I'm aware. I bought a copy of the last year they made them for but that was a while ago and can't remember the date it was. However, even old discs will have everywhere you need to go on them, and if you find a road has been closed or made one way opposite to where you're heading for and have to drive past, the discs are quick at finding alternative routes, just keep driving. Other members might be able to point you to a more modern replacement.

Is it a Mk3 CD or the Mk4 DVD drive?
There are places that refurbish them as they are common to BMW & Range Rovers, but it's probably just worth getting another unit of eBay. Think there are companies that still produce the DVD maps for BMW highline units so you can probably get an up to date enough disc for them |

Hi, no it's definitely the unit not the disc. The dead ones I have are an MG Rover one from June 2002, part YIB000260 and a Rover Group one, part YIB1000030.
I guess the BMW & Range Rover models wouldn't fit the 75? |

The BMW Mk4 units are a straight swap and up to date discs are available for them.
The older Mk3 units could easily be damaged by removing power while the car's k-bus is active (with minutes of opening a door, bonnet or boot lid, operating the ignition etc.) |

Right, thanks all, looks like i'll have to trawl Ebay tomorrow , see if I can find something.
However as it is due for MOT on Saturday and preliminaries have revealed £600 of work needs doing, I wonder if it might be time to say bye-bye. Cars eh, they keep you poor! |

If your car has a satnav, and you need to remove the battery, open the boot and bonnet, go to the boot, wait for the red light on the satnav unit to pulse then go out BEFORE removing the battery.

These can be changed if you read a few threads, i need to change one of my spares from BMW to MG with a custom screen but have not got round to it yet. My other unit had already been updated. |
