And a big thank you to Artic and others who pointed me n the right direction. I fitted a working s/hand unit this morning as it wasn't raining. I squirted some silicon in before fitting. All's good. When the waist level trim arrives from MickeyBoy I'll put the doorcard back on.

I will be dismantling the old unit and having a go at a refurb. as per Artic's How to and Stocktake's advice.

Do post back how you did it and links to any parts you had to buy. I think my offside rear has filed. I have a spare but if a repair is easy to do I will repair the faulty one.

HI

I'll try and do that but not anytime soon, sorry. I have to give priority to keeping the the Yamaha fit (supposed to give it a 16K service but so far only changed the oil!) and getting the Matchless back on the road (major engine rebuild). Need to be ready if lockdown ends.

PS earlier on in this thread GaryGee posted this - "Found this very useful vid the other day, don't know if the guy is on here

But apparently the motors referred to in the video are wrong and Stocktake posted this:

"The link above is totally the wrong motor as the connections are a different type;
These are the correct connections " the link takes you here:

Matchless, that's a name I have not heard in a while, along with AJS.
The matchless will be easy compared to the Yamaha as long as you can get spares.
Good luck
