The noise can be heard when attempting to start which of course it can't do.
I now have one of the most accessorised, most polished, best loved and downright beautiful paper weights that there is.

I can't talk about it right now. Waiting for a tow truck.
I'll add more detail tomorrow.

Sigh. Just sigh.

p.s.
I knew it was time to replace the belts. I frankly couldn't afford it and was living on borrowed time.
I'm not blaming anything other than that.
2003 model. Original belts.
I feel for you, hope you can sort something out.

Default An option for you to consider.

Matthew, if you are interested, our Melbourne repairer has replacement heads, valves (already assembled). His cost (labour and parts): AUD $2,100-00.
Contact me if you wish to discuss.

Apologies for delay, but this Covid-19 lockdown saw him in the Northern Territory for two weeks isolating before further testing negative so he could enter N.S.W. to apply his mechanical skills at the Bathurst 1000 car race.

Keep positive, egremont.

Thank you Bruce.
Times are indeed odd lately. Covid-19 shall have repercussions for decades to come.
Who would have thought!

$2100 seems about right for a timing belt plus two cam belts plus tensioners and a water pump plus hmmmmm the other stuff that needs doing.

The sounds that the engine makes now when attempting to start makes me think that an engine swap is a likely option but I'm no experienced mechanic. I have never had to replace an engine before so I shall let the mechanic inform me of what work needs to be done.

Thank you so very much Bruce (Egremont). Thank you a billion times over.
I would not have known what to do with her otherwise.

I am keeping positive now

The Covid restrictions currently forbid me from getting down your way for now but, when I am able to tow the poor old girl from Ballarat to Melbourne then I will be doing just that, at a million miles an hour.
Ummm ... did I say that out loud? Damn.

Anyway. The moment I can get there I will get there.

Do a bit of homework and counting before anything else. It's possible to repair almost anything, but the manager at our local dealership was given a car when it suffered from belt problems. He, and the mechanics, rebuilt the cylinder heads, new belts etc but when started there was a knock much lower down in the engine. The car was scrapped.
There are some companies who will sell a renovated KV6 at not so much more than you've been quoted, and shipping can be cheaper than you imagine. Perhaps MickeyBoy has a used engine which he's test driven, and don't forget to look at the Freelander pages as the KV6 was used there too.

Regards
