Morning sun worshippers (or not, as the case may be). Looks like an 'ot 'un again, although there is a just a touch of refreshing breeze when you're in the shade. We've got loads to do in the garden - dismantle and rebuild a wall with a severe lean; transplant loads of flowers and plants to different parts etc. etc. - but it's too darned hot to be outside for more than a few minutes at a time.

Good morning all from a cool Nairobi. It is winter here and it doesn't start to warm up until September. However, I am looking forward to catching the warmer weather in London on Sunday.
Living part of the year in Africa, the temps in the bush can get up to 45C and over the years, I have learned a few tricks for surviving that kind of heat. Wear a hat, drink lots of water, keep out of the sun during the hottest time of the day and have a siesta in the afternoon. If at home, look out for anyone who is vulnerable and living on their own, elderly or those who struggle with their health. The obese find it difficult in the heat to keep cool. Not everyone will have a fan or A/C. Obese smokers have a hard time when the air is hot and polluted. Having wet flannels, dabbing the neck/face/wrists and iced water in a hot water bottle can help at night in bed and putting on cold socks from the fridge and wearing them in bed helps drop the body temp. The other one, is to soak a sheet in cold water, then cover yourself with it on the bed and direct a fan at yourself. A cheap form of A/C and it does work. Drink at least 3 - 4 L of water in the heat. If you are not drinking enough, you will sweat loads, then dehydration and trouble can follow. In high temps, the heart has to work faster to pump the blood around the body to try and keep it cool. So anything you can do to keep cool, will also help the heart Avoid caffeine and alcohol A few years ago, we were driving back to Nairobi and had to pull off the road and camp out in a tent out in the bush in excessively high temperatures. At night it is dangerous to drive on the roads because some vehicles drive without lights. Once we set up camp, it was too hot to wear any clothes and we had to douse ourselves and our camp beds with water to try and keep cool at night. Occasionally we came out of the tent to catch a breeze and throw more water over ourselves. It is not possible to leave the tent door open at night in the bush, because of predators or peeping Toms! But using some common sense, we got through the night and lived to tell the tale. Any other tips, anyone?? Have a great day |

We're all kinda in the same boat Phil, too bleedin' hot. When I went out to measure for the doors on the bunker it was downright unpleasant. Days like this the girls tend to hide behind the sofa. Maya loves water, can't water the garden without her getting soaked as well!

Afternoon all, Holy Moly I've just been down to ASDA and it says 29C on the temp gauge.
I'm sat in me budgie smugglers at the computer desk with the fan on full blast blowin' up me Khyber pass. Salad weather so I'm cooking a smoked gammon joint with roast potatoes & roast parsnips glazed with honey.
