Default Cutting Out

Hi All

I am new to this site and still thombling around,

I need help!

I have a Rover 75 2.0 CDI Saloon auto 2002.

It has started cutting out I could be driving along and it just stops but then starts up again after a few minutes.

I have changed the Fuel Pump & Filter. but just notice that on the display EP comes up.

Any help would be most appreciated.

If EP is coming up on the display when it cuts out then likely the ECM (the ECU that controls the engine) is failing. Does the oil light come on with key to position II as it should before you attempt a restart?

The most common cause is blocked plenum drains (just below the front of the windscreen - the ECM lives on the near side, and the brake servo on the offside).

If the ECM goes for a swim the CAN bus controller, which is situated low down on the board fails, which causes the EP to come up on the autobox display as the autobox loses communication with the ECM.

Also the LP fuel pumps shut off, causing the car to stall.

So the first job is to check and clear out your plenum drains and dry out your ECM - plenty of info on the forum if you do a search.

And the second job is to contact Marinabrian on here - he is the Wizard of the Wand when it comes to repairing your ECM, or if it is beyond repair, supplying and programming a replacement.

He also offers a very fast turn around postal service.

Many Thanks for your advice,

I have checked the ECM and it is bone dry and all the drain plugs are clear.

I drove the car for 40 miles yesterday and it was perfect then I went to the local shop and it cut out twice within a couple of miles again the EP lit up in the auto display and the pump under the rear seat was not running.

Any idea's?

When the in tank pump wasn't running was the under bonnet LP pump still working?

Next time it happens check that the oil light is coming on with key to position II as it should before you start the engine.

If neither of LP fuel pumps are working when the car stalls, and you get EP up on the display then get your ECM checked out by Marinabrian - it is showing all the symptoms of failing.

If the under bonnet pump was working and the in tank pump wasn't then sounds like it is on the way out as they are fed from the same relay.

Worth replacing the in tank pump but do PM Brian and see what he thinks, as I would have expected the under bonnet pump not to be working when the engine cut out & you got the EP up on the display if the ECM was faulty.

If you wish I can also have a look at it for you and if necessary supply you with a replacement ECM if needed and I'm just down the road
