My car is a bit older than yours and the driveshafts are still fine. It has now done over 439k miles and the gearbox driveshaft seals are original and don't leak. If it ain't broke........

Yes, I agree, but does no harm to have spares especially as they are cheap :-)

Don't suppose you would know if the Tripod bearing is the same size on a 1.8 as it is on a Cdti - I'm sure I saw a driveshaft thread where you mention Tripod, that's why I thought I'd ask you :-)

One of those drive shafts may be available on the very very cheap if you need it.

Thanks Ian, they are all gone now. I'm now wondering if a 1.8 Tripod bearing is the same size as that on a Cdti?

Thanks Mike. Been looking into this and yes driveshafts all different length between manual auto petrol and diesel. But the Tripod housing looks to be the same on diesel and KV6. I was hoping this would be the case for 1.8. Can't find anything regarding oem tripod bearing part numbers?

If one of mine went I'd replace the entire drivshaft with a used one. They are usually pretty much bulletproof - even the rubber boots don't seem to degrade. Hardly worth stripping them out, but I do have a spare from each side in the garage from a scrapper ready and waiting if need be.

I have just bought a "spares or repair" gearbox to try and make 1 good one out of 2 with different probs. The seller had blanked the drive shaft holes with Champaign corks! Havent tried to get them out yet but no oil leaked into the boot of the car.
Whist you have the drive shaft out it may be a bit easier access to the oil drain and filler plugs; make sure you can loosen at least the filler plug!.
Good luck with the clutch replacement; did one recently and it was no end of a Phaff! Think there was more wrong than just the cluutch as last time I did one it was a fiddle but got it all back together and working well.
