Driveshaft removal (for clutch change) - advice please

I'm planning to get to the clutch by lowering the gearbox using Colin James' threaded rod method link.

First question is how to remove the LH driveshaft from the diff without having the special tool mentioned in Rave.



Subframe & lower arms are already off the car btw.

Always used a pry bay or similar to pop them out. A selection of decent sized screwdrivers and bars will make light work of getting it out

Do you mean put a prybar in where arrowed and just lever against the diff?
(Or preferably two bars at the same time, second one on the opposite side of the shaft).

How much oil will come out?

Just a pry bar in where the arrows are will do, no oil will come out (assuming you drain the gearbox first)

It's off - slid out with the first friendly tap on a medium prybar. Not much oil spill even though I haven't drained the box yet.

Good job I had it roped up to the shocker top mount holes - it was twice as heavy as I thought it would be!

Don't forget gearbox oil!

Easy way to remember things like that, get yourself some luggage labels, the ones with the string to tie up.
Then just write what you need to remember and tie it to the steering wheel.

well done Simon. May I suggest wrapping the gearbox ends in a clean plastic bag, may be a food bag to prevent dirt being taken into the gearbox when you reinstate. Also a little bit f oil on the splines before you put the hub on them.

I don't know how others get this job done in a day.

When you split the gear box get a large bit of card, draw the positions of the bolts on the card and make a hole at each point, insert the bolts in the card at the correct places as they are different lengths.

If I do that I'll just forget to look at the steering wheel.

I've got a system of reminder notes, each one a 1/4 of an A4 sheet. There are hundreds of them all over the place here - hence I forget to read them and the system goes to pot.

Good idea to cover the gearbox ends - I'll do that. Ditto oiling the splines and the bolt position card.

Both driveshafts are off now and the diff seals look ok - I might fit new ones anyway (#11 here).

Is there an easy way to get these seals out Ian? Or is it a case of screwdriver and hammer.
