Your ability to get £130 worth of pads out of them is virtually zero. You will sell or px the car before you get that many sets of pads fitted. It’s cynical marketing that rips off those who don’t know.
This is why their MOT test price is usually “on special offer”
Had my cars MOTed at Halfords in Southampton for the last 4 or 5 years. Never had a fail or any talk of work being required.
Why do I post, just to show not all bad

The're not bald, no bald spots, no bulges, just worn on the outside edge. Wear makers show more than 1.6mm.???
I would be too, the 1mm across the whole tyre applies to vehicles used before 1933 and vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats, if the central 3/4 of the tyre has more than 1.6mm go back and asked them for a VT17 (appeal form), chances are they will back down and retest it with a pass and maybe an advisory.

Here's one of the front tyres, the other is slightly better if pushed:

As Phil says above. On the MOT system there are two boxes for tread 1.6 and 1.0 limits so they may of just ticked the wrong box. The edge of the tyre isn’t classed as part of the tread as it’s not a full cut into the main tread so an advise only

Cheers Mark,
Advisory, was my 'laymans' belief of the state of the tyres.
However as they have been classified as (dangerous defect) we can't drive the car to the repair location (tyres) I have to take the wheels off and take them. Just a faff!

I would say though that if the wear is excessive on one or both edges due to underinflation or wheel misalignment, they are correct in failing them as the cords could be very close to being exposed.

Just back from the mot station.

The youth on reception duties stated "the MOT is NEVER wrong"
I pointed out that on their invoice/vehicle check report they state the tyre tread to be 2mm. So why the difference?

"The invoice/vehicle check report is obviously wrong!"
Who checked the car for the report?
"The mot inspector"
What, the guy who never makes mistakes?......................................... .

We then walked out.
I will complain to head office, but I don't have time for the FT1 route as my daughter wants the car.

Dont take this wrong but with the downpours we have been having recently I would want at least a couple of MM on my tyres. I know it is only a legal requirement for 1.6 but that is the minimum amount.

I recently borrowed a friends van and I was shocked how little grip I had when it rained, when I handed it back I noticed both the front tyres were close to the legal limit.

I get it there is a cost involved but how would you feel about the money if you are upside down in a ditch with a broken leg and a gash on your face?

As far as Halfords I would not entrust them to MOT a push bike, the one near me has been ripping people off for years with work being done that was not required and failing cars on points that most sensible MOT testers would give an advise on. Find a local garage that does only MOT's, they are not interested in getting work so will be fare and if you use them all the time you will build up a relationship with them and that can help.

I have no issues with anything you say
The tyres are on order, all 4.
The brakes will be sorted once the tyres are on as I can't drive the car with the 'dangerous, do NOT drive' flag.

It's just the arrogance of them

They can't do that, if the DVSA examined them straight afterwards, the MOT tester and also the testing station would be in big trouble for failing the vehicle.
The vehicle has to be tested as presented and those tyres would only have been given an advisory for inner edge worn.
