Default Exhaust Query

Hi
My 75 became very noisy, and a reputable tyre and exhaust centre replaced the back box, which was holed.

Afterwards, matters were even worse, with severe vibration and noise. The garage then apologetically replaced the new back box with another brand, and the problem was solved. I am curious as to why a new backbox made the car sound really terrible, yet another, similar item worked properly?

Mmmm, sounds like they opted to put on a Cheap replacement possibly to increase the profit margin, that failed. And then had to replace it with a more substantial one

There's no such thing as a reputable tyre and exhaust centre.

It happens a lot, a back box with very little substance or wadding to keep noise down. The sound then makes a booming noise in the cabin and isn't very nice to hear.

Normally I would agree, but this particular one is not a chain, but a family run concern who take pride in their reputation.

Forty years ago, my Opel Rekord required a new auto gearbox mounting, which I acquired. I asked a well-known, now notorious chain in Milton Keynes to fit it. The fitter managed to put it on upside down, and allowed me to reverse off the ramp amidst a terrible banging cacophony. I put it back on the ramp, and it was obvious what he had done. He corrected the error, without a single word of apology. Now that's what I call disreputable!

I bet we can all guess which chain is involved!

A while ago a replacement exhaust on a 2.5 v6 produced the same effect. It was so discomfiting I sold the car. A decision I regret to this day, 'twas a really good car. Forever tempted to buy another v6.

Yes, they are lovely, unique cars. I've had mine almost seventeen years, covered well over 110k miles in her, and I'm still in love!

Incompetent is probably a better term to describe an individual fitter, collectively disreputable, though!
