I found this post on a Youtube video for Rufford Ford
"sorry but its not covered by Fully comp insurance my partner is a senior Insurance Underwriter for AXA, they( ins companies) generally only cover mechnical failure if its a direct result of a natural disaster or if the mechanical failure was caused by an Accident , Vandalism or Fire, they scrutinise any potential claims for mechanical failure with dilligence, Ins companies are not stupid they consider all factors. They wont cover wilful negligence. "

Many fools don't realise the limitations of their cars and vans when encountering flood water and just think they can plough on regardless. The problem is that with a modern car, not designed for off road or wading is that even if they manage to get through the ford in one piece and without hydro locking the engine they will probably be faced with a hefty repair bill to replace the catalytic converter which will have most likely suffered from thermal shock. This will occur when a hot catalytic converter is driven through deep water. If shocked enough, the substrate inside fractures and can lead to the blockage of the exhaust and thus smothering the engine. It will also show up as a failure at MoT time if they still chose to ignore the noise. Listen to some of the idiots cars as they leave and you can hear the cat rattling. Stupid isnt the word

Should be a subject of the driving test.

I bet no driving instructors cover the subject either.

They rely on common sense.-------

Surely, common sense should be part of being brought-up?

It is time we stopped blaming midwives for delivering, teachers for lack of parenting and now driving instructors for the lack of common sense injection.

Let's put the blame where it rightly belongs - with parents and parenting.

Merry Christmas to all.

Hi Maninder.
Trouble is some parents do not have common sense, you can not be taught common sense you either have or you don't and quite a lot of people don't that is why i said in my previous post surely instead of filming the carnage happening at least try and stop people from going through the ford, flag them down.

Even better complain to the council and get the road closed when in flood, or put a metal temporary bridge from one side or the dip to the other, it would not be hard.

Even though the sign says road closed due to flood it's not closed though is it, put barriers across the road, another simple job to do.

You cannot teach "common sense". Common sense is based on your previous experiences in life.
That does not stop you teaching the effect of going through flooded roads though.

If you close the road so people cannot pass what do people learn?
If they drive through the ford and ruin their car I think it is fair to say one would expect them to learn.
I wonder what percentage of those that go through the ford and ruin their cars are mechanically minded and what percent take it to the mechanic to do all work. My expectation would be few are mechanically minded.

Would be interesting to see a sign, "if you drive through the ford you may ruin your vehicle" and if people continue to drive through and knacker their cars, vans etc.

So I know, next time I’m facing a journey home through the flooded lanes in Wiltshire what is the safe wading depth of a ZT/75?

The engine intake sits in the wing about top of wheel height. The Ecu in the plenum is probably a bit lower. Other sensors even lower.

Any more than ground clearance (155mm) taken quite slowly is risking it? What would turn you back if the journey was important?
