Opening Bonnet Emergency

I am at present servicing the bonnet latch release mechanism. I have been advised to open and clean and grease the 2 latches. I am using the spray on white door hinge grease. I need to replace the long cable that operates the LHS latch. Does anyone know where these cables are available? I have always been concerned that if the bonnet failed to open when the pull lever was operated. I was recently told that a welding rod could be hooked on to the junction box where the 2 cables meet the single from the lever. Then operated from there. I looked, and could not see how that would work. I wonder if anyone on the forum could advise me?
