Default Driving Licence Date ( Fine )

Today I had been looking through all my cars papers ie checking I have the policy in place in my car folders, mot papers, breakdown papers phone numbers I may need etc.

I was half way through when i came across a pamphlet i must have picked up at some time, it is an important notice for drivers to check that their licence was in date or not and if not to renew asap, to avoid a possible fine of £1,000.

It gave /gives five reason to renew.

1 You must by law, update your licence every 10 years.
2 £1,000 is possible if stopped by police & the licence is not in date.
3 It could void your car insurance.
4 You may have difficulties hiring a car, in an emergency.
5 Driving abroad you may be in breach of local laws.

When i checked mine after reading the pamphlet i was happy to see i have another 2 years before it expires.

You can check your licence by looking at section 4b on your photo card, below is an example photo.

I wonder how many have checked in the last few years, if not i bet you will after reading this cheers Arctic.

I still have the old pink licence that was last changed in the early 80's when I last moved, so more than ten years ago.
I just checked here:

https://www.gov.uk/exchange-paper-driving-licence

And it seems from what it says that I am ok.
Is there a ten year rule with the photo licence I wonder?

Edit:
It seems it does only apply to photocard.

I nearly fell into that trap a few years ago Steve When checking my licence because of the bruhaha about certain rights being missed off renewals, ie, entitlement for motorcycles, I found mine close to the 10 year renewal Got it done, but as I say, if you renew, check all your entitlements

The old non photo pink licence is valid until you are 70. It does not expire every 10 years.

I just used it to hire a car on business last week. They were happy to use the old pink style licence as evidence. However the hire car company did ask me to verify my licence online at DVLA before arriving to hire the car. Verifying at DVLA generates a check code for them at time of hire and verifies your licence is still valid at time of hire, but I would think this would occur with or without the photo licence due to some seriously deluded individuals hiring vans and turning them into killing machines.

Unless you change your details on the licence then you should be able to avoid the 10 year renewal rip off.

The 10 year expiry rule is valid for photo card licences, all due to people's appearance's changing... So an up to date photo is essential.

Thankfully SWMBO and I both have the old style pink licences, so that is one less thing to worry about.

Its a good thing SWMBO does not need to apply for a new licence every time her hair style / colour changes ......

When you do renew, check that you don't lose anything that was on the old one. I was put on a restricted licens due to a period of dizziness and when things improved and I got my license back again, I had lost minibus and 7.5 tonne entitlement. It meant a lot of form filling to get them back again so I never bothered as I didn't use them any more. It never occured to me that I may need to hire them in the future. The daft part was I still had motorcycles on my restricted license!

Good advice

Very important to check your new licence carefully to ensure that all your current entitlements are transferred from your old one.
