Think you will find they were way earlier than IC cars. Pre. 1900, then the oil boom came along , and Henry ford did the rest

They have been around a long time. The historic issues were short ranges and excessive weigh. The technology has moved on as you hardly hear hydrogen mentioned now and that was hyped as the way forward.

So, nothing changed there then!

There is talk of shipping being powered by hydrogen and HGV's Personally I think it is a better option than batteries (more helpful if they choose materials which don't explode or combust then the present Li).

At this point in time unless hydrogen is produced by renewable green methods it's going to be a non starter for large scale production, Blue hydrogen produced by using lpg/natural gas even with a carbon capture system is more polluting than coal or diesel or just burning the LPG in a combustion engine. It will be subject to carbon taxes also making it expensive. https://www.archyde.com/study-blue-h...al-and-diesel/

The upcoming EU ETS (emission trading system) is going to include aviation & shipping for the first time (as well as road transport https://www.euractiv.com/section/emi...-is-essential/ which will mean airlines & shipping & refineries will have to purchase carbon credits to continue to operate. https://www.euractiv.com/section/shi...clearly-legal/
