Default Grrrrrr

Every time I relax, think everything’s sorted, and I can give it another 5 years before the Nissan Leaf… started down the drive this morning, and there was a clunk like when the rear brake sticks sometimes… I assumed that was it, and moved another couple of yards, only for the noise to get worse.

Front o/s spring broken, and done a lathe treatment on the tyre too, which fortunately isn't too new, though still another year on it.

Have to get a breakdown truck to take it to the garage, and won’t get it back till next week…

I’m guessing it would be prudent to get both front springs done? The rear ones have already been replaced in the last 3-4 years…

I won’t even mention the powerfold mirrors

Personally I'd always replace springs in pairs.

Worth fitting spring protectors if you haven't already.

Always best, tyres in pairs.

Fit the new ones to the rear.--Best in damp conditions and also will keep them away from those darn front springs.---

Well hopefully the new springs won't break again in the remaining time I have the car

Interestingly, the tow truck guy said mine was far from the first broken spring he'd had to deal with - a couple of other victims reported hearing a loud bang in the middle of the night as they broke.

Guess old springs don't like the cold

My local, family run, garage are seeing a massive increase in broken springs.

They say they've never had so many and reckon it's the diabolical state of the roads plus the vast number of speed humps that is causing it.

Sounds reasonable to me.

Having said that my Wedgewood tourer broke its front spring while jacked up in the air

Hope it is all sorted very soon.

Of course. you havent mentioned the poor quality steel used in many of these springs. 2 of mine went just sitting on the drive but both after a cold weather snap. which is the key factor I believe

Probably fractured by an impact from a pot hole or speed bump only to succumb to the heat cycle from daytime to night time.
Freezing temperatures seem often to be the last straw.---

A few years ago the FOS spring on the 75 Tourer Connie CDTi broke just as I set off to return home from the Moselle Valley in Germany; day after a cold snap. Got it fixed there and stayed on holiday with Linda and the three kids.for an extra week.

FNS spring went on the old style Mondeo diesel estate a long time ago as I left work at Durham. I didn't realise what the bang was. Took a quick look and didn't see that the sharp spring was only millimetres away from the tyre. Steady 70 mph back to North Yorks, dropped off the person I was giving a lift to and on to my indie garage.

They couldn't believe how lucky I was.
