Thanks, I'll take a look at the alternator for anything obvious.
On a side note I did check the wiring around the ECU for any issues and found a small green wire with a red stripe that has broken. Looks to have been like it for some time as the copper wire inside was all dark and no longer shiny. Trying to waggle the wire with the ignition on, the fault does not appear so.. a little unsure what this wire could be at this point. https://ibb.co/Wn89KRS |

Small update/question
Still not arranged to meet with big Russ as yet due to other commitments.
However tried a new battery as the old one was old and undersized. New battery an 096 unit. Abs and brake fault appears for a few seconds and then goes away.. worse when Raining. So.. got the multimeter out today, car pared up over night. Battery vtage shows 12.5v Starting up (rear demister possibly on) check voltage again. 14.9v So.. having a quick Google the BMW E46 forums, shows other people have experienced over charging and this can bring on abs and brake fault and transmission fault warnings etc. My question at this point is... Would you expect the alternator on a car that has been standing overnight and so only started, idling would you expect the voltage to be 14.9 or... Could this be a sign the regulator is packing up? Could a too higher voltage really cause the abs and brake fault to flash up. If so... Why does rain make the issue worse, I tried to replicate the issue with the hose pipe and It would flash up with the fault. Thanks Rob |

I don't know whether there is a shared earth for both the engine loom and abs circuit. Perhaps worth looking into?

If there is I'd be very interested to know where I'd be willing to give the earth a clean and a check over.

Another quick update.
Visited big Russ today over in liversidge Cleared a load of fault codes that were stored, he test drove the car while monitoring the wheel speeds and found it to be okay. Battery voltage shown in t4 was fine too. Couldn't get the abs or brake fault to flash up all the time we were there (sods law!) So.. at this point Russ has advised I check the engine bay fuse box which I'll do when the weather warms up if the fault shows itself again. A huge thanks to Russ for the time he gave today. Very knowledgeable friendly fella Thanks Rob |
