I am hoping the starter has broken internally and locked up the engine, I know its a long shot, but for the sake of a couple of hours I'm going to have a look.

Won't it turn either way with a socket and bar on the pulley Andy? If it will go backwards then with the starter removed you could check the DMF also moves to rule out a snapped crankshaft.

It wouldn't go either way Mike, that's why I want the starter off and see what it does then.

It was not a nice feeling.

If it was a petrol I'd have to suggest a potential coming together of the valves and pistons. It would explain why it can't be turned over by hand.

Sorry to be a doom merchant but that reminds me very much of what happened to me with a snapped crankshaft. Engine change sadly

Well Andy & Debs have just left after whipping out the starter motor, and engine is officially dead

Something has locked up/siezed/<insert expletive> up so in true Monty Python ..... it is an ex-car.

Oh well.

It’s always worth a look just in case, the engine is well and truly locked up!

Would be worth putting an engine in if someone fancies a challenge as it’s a nice car.

Just goes to show how good these cars are, here's a perfect example....finally died at just over a quarter of a million miles

Plenty of sensible mileage (sub 100k) diesels being written off nowadays due to a broken headlight/bumper, ideal to keep this one going for another 250,000 miles...

And before anyone suggests, NO - I don't want another project !!
