Control Panel > Game Controllers - WinXP?
With a joystick installed, if I click on Game Controllers - I just see a brief eggtimer replace the mouse cursor and nothing more. All of the other Control Panel icons work normally apart from this. Anyone know of a fix please?
I also have two copies of Network Connections, each slightly different from the other when opened.

Try uninstalling the game controllers driver, then reboot. It should ask for the driver location again, then put the driver CD for the game controller in your CDrom drive and it should sort itself out..

I have just tried that, apart from installing the drivers from CD (XP found its drivers), but it made no difference.

You could try a system restore. Take it back a week or so and try your driver disk again.
Might be worth a try, you can always undo if it doesn't work.. |

Definately not malware and system restore will not help, the problem has been there for a while.
It no great inconvenience, just more of a curiosity.

XP does not always use the proper driver, have had several occassions where printers, graphics cards etc. had XP drivers installed and failed to work as they should, remedy was always to install the mnfr drivers, or latest update, for a permanent fix. Can't say your controllers will have same issue, but as it's been that way for sometime, it's a good and inexpensive possibility.

The actual joystick (rather a fancy Logitech one) has always worked fine and I had always been able to use its control panel icon. During a moment of nostalgia, I installed a copy of Elite adapted for the PC, which is supposed to be able to use the PC's Joystick. playing Elite had turned into a obsession with me, during the days of the BBC computers. What I found was the joystick's 'UP' would work, but not the 'DOWN' in Elite, but the joystick worked fine with everything else. So then I tried opening it up in Control Panel, but its icon did nothing.

If you still have the mnfr CD why not re-install the original drivers anyway, and with luck the Elite will work properly with them, seems to me when you installed the game at least one of the driver files changed. It;s not unknown for several copies of the same file to be installed, each attributed to different software.
My solution as always not foolproof and no guarantees of a cure, but, takes only a short time to do, and 50/50 chance of success. Chips |
