Replacing ABS Sensor - Was this a reasonable cost ?

Hello,

ABS sensor was coming on intermittently at the beginning of this week and then for last couple of days on permanently - along with no speedo and erratic fuel guage.

This forum was a great help in diagnosing the fault - abs sensor in front drivers side wheel.

Booked it in today to my local MG Rover specialist who have a T4. As per this forum, they soon rang me to say it was a faulty sensor

Problem now fixed but I am £162 lighter - does this sound about right for replacing 'a bit of wire' ??

These sensors are at times a bit temperamental. I had for a period of about 14 days the sensor going off, only to come on again after switching the ignition off and on again. I took the sensor off maybe 4 or 5 times, cleaned in the hole with an ear-bud and replaced it, only for it to go faulty a couple of hours later.
However I persisted, and the problem has now gone away. Ask me how, I don't know.
But I think that it would be difficult to damage the sensor, unless it is visibly damaged.

if the car is rusty you have to drill the sensor out and sometimes you can damage the bearing which has a mgnetic strip on it ,so you have to be carfull i could have done if for £100.

Was the erratic fuel gauge related to the ABS sensor in any way , or just coincidence ?

I think there is a connection, I had the ABS light and no speedo problem, the fuel guage also became erratic. After I replaced the sensor, everything went back to normal.

I recently had a similar issue to those described here. Front, offside brake emitted a gravelly crunching noise and noticeable pulsing through brake pedal, no ABS light coming on and no other problems. Mechanic replaces both rear discs and pads, which he said were quite rusty and said that the fronts were ok but that a couple of bolts were slightly loose on lower wishbone bush brackets. Anyway, noise stopped and I’m happy, for a while. A few weeks later, exactly the same symptoms when travelling up North. Took to friendly mechanic who changed both front discs and pads but, because he hadn’t cured the issue, only charged for parts, (trade cost £60). He did say he thought it must be an ABS problem. Having read the stuff on here, I removed the ABS fuse and took the car for a spin. Braking smooth and no problems or dodgy noises. Does this indicate a front O/S sensor problem or are there more options?

raykay I really should get out more....... Now Other Manufacturer Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Co.
