Other than looking for obvious signs of damage ,what other checks can I do ?

Might be worth checking the O ring on the fuel pressure regulator hasn't failed. The regulator sits on the end of the HP fuel pump.
What were the readings from the leak off test? |

corroded connection on fuel pressure sensor. Seems to be ok now. Fingers crossed.
