London Congestion Charge
Visited the smoke yesterday from mine to Chelsea, had to purchase the charge the day before. Well, is this working, left mine at 9 am got to Chelsea at one pm, so that's 112 miles in 4 hours this equates to an average speed of 29mph. Congestion Charge, rip off or what. Considering that where I live two cars together is considered to be a traffic jam this was indeed an eye opener, and don't even get me going on about the push bike riders with a death wish. And to think, people live with this rip off charge on a daily basis.

Couldn't disagree more - I think it is great value for money!
I got loads of congestion for my £11.50 when I visited London. To be honest, far too much - 2 quid's worth would have been enough for me. I did email Transport for London to congratulate them on on such a good deal, but sadly didn't get a reply. |

And you wonder why we don't drive into London.
I live on the outskirts of London and have a perfectly fine Underground service. Only nutters commute, by car, into London from these parts. I am not saying you are a nutter, as I'm sure you had a valid reason to go there by car from Suffolk, as it is no doubt easier. |

If I have to go into town let alone a city I don't even use the car anymore, Bus or train is much easier/quicker. although happily I don't have to go anywhere near city centres anymore

Just noticed on the news that PARIS has been having high pollution days....
To encourage people out of their cars they have made PUBLIC TRANSPORT FREE for all users on these days. I wonder if TFL would ever consider that option ? |

To give it up would be a dream but then you wake and start to scream. Another day, a day in hell. You'd risk the train but what a smell. Those unwashed bodies you abound, another thing that awful sound. People coughing, sneezing germs. You'll never, ever come to terms. Public transport will take you far, but you'd much rather go by car. Your private, quiet, lovely space, the grin starts creeping cross your face. You snuggle down, you spin the wheel. You rocket off, your tyres squeal. This affair will never be over, because you simply LOVE your ROVER. __ |

It's just another tax Mike, dressed-up with an environmentally friendly name to make it sound attractive at election time. As you rightly say, the traffic jams haven't changed but TfL's bank balance has.

I think car numbers are down about 10% in london since they brought the charge in. Doing some reading the CC brings in less than 10% of TfL's budget. I thought it would be more than that seeing how many cars go into london each day.
I wonder how high the charge would have to go before there was a big drop in numbers, say 30%? |
