I actually forgot about this 6 month extension, and was fully intending taking it for test as it's due on the 7th August. Last Friday I received a message saying it didn't need an mot just yet. Then last night I received another message saying the 6 month extension will end and all cars due after 1 August have to go on time, and that includes mine. Make up ya mind lol.

I was actually going to take it anyway, as like Brian pointed out, summer MOT's are better in my opinion.

google m o t, click on the gov. site, put reg. no in, get m o t due date .simples, saves trying to do brain deadening calculations.

My lads Focus ST MOT was due, and spoke to my friendly MOT tester about getting it done now or taking advantage of the extension, (they have never closed and have been open for tests and repairs/servicing throughout).

He recommended getting it done when originally due, not just for safety and peace of mind, but that he'd heard via trade(and don't believe for a minute he'd lie or spread rumours) that some insurance companies, if a car insured with them was involved in a RTC and was "on extension", they were sending inspectors to virtually MOT them and if a fail fault was found, declaring it as unroadworthy and only paying out third-party costs.

True ? I can't guarantee it is, but knowing insurance companies propensity to avoid paying out it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

My MOT man said similar that you need to tell your insurance if your using the extension . Used a month of mine simply because it needed new tyres and i wanted the wheels refurbished first .

That's entirely as it should be. How on Earth should a virus magically make an unroadworthy vehicle suddenly roadworthy? And how would a HMGOVUK tax office know that your car was in good strength?

The insurance companies are merely adhering to the letter of their policies. Funny how we slag them for sticking to it other times but breath a sigh of relief when they don't.

What's to stop owners getting the MOT early? I look forward to an MOT, it's good news even when it 'fails', it's possibly saved my life. And that of my wife.

Insofar as isolation goes, the examination usually takes place in a spot where the public are not allowed (Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act and so on), so isolation is irrelevant.
