Default Film The Martian

I watched the film The Martian again last night. I personally think it's a great film, it's just a shame they left so much junk up there.

I've watched it twice and enjoyed it both times, but the many scientific mistakes did grate a bit. Hollywood always has to jazz things up. Virtually no atmosphere, yet a massive storm catastrophically damages everything solid provided by NASA (or possibly Space X ) . Yet he survives for hundreds of days using the same wrecked kit repaired with plastic and duct tape. I think we can all imagine how hostile Mars would be to life even if nothing went wrong. They will have to start with a moonbase. I think a manned mission to Mars would be suicide with present technology. No storms on the moon too lol.

Enjoyed the film .... watched it a couple of times.

But I don't think it was based on a true story.. !

The book is a good read and there's more in it too.

If you want more space junk watch Gravity!

Stay safe folks ... the end is in sight...!?

No it wasn't. But I did think the film crew could have helped him a bit more, they must have had their own food.

Morally, they couldnt, it is a bit like Attenborough's teams. They are there to observe only not interfere.

At one point Mark Watney was having 1 potato (roughly) every three days lol. I dont think weight/size would be an issue lol.

I wonder if the e-coli bacteria could have even been present? The entire crew and food would have been pretty sterile before leaving earth. He was a botanist, so worked with what he knew, and the only slurry he knew that would work was freeze dried human waste, where again any bacteria should have been destroyed - I wonder if the slurry would have been potent enough for it to actually work.

hmmm more questions now.....

The book is great.

For a really excellent interview with the author Andy Weir check this out - and pay attention to the scientific work
