The motors come in two main forms: ( there is a lesser used variant on some 1.8's) 4 wire three speed and 2 wire two speed with a resistor. these are both fitted to the V6 petrol and the diesel

So, the actual motors are the same. They are not plug and play however as the relay boxes are quite different and also the fan shroud

If you have a four wire three speed fitted and the replacement is going to be a two speed two wire there is a wiring diagram on here somewhere

Hi Julian,

As Stocktake says, no. The V6 control box will not work with your diesel.

Let's get back to basics. You say that your current fan doesn't work on slow speed. Does it have a resistor?

I've still got the control box off mine(no resistor) if you want to swap it over or try it.
Its untested but the motor in mine was shot and inside the box is nice and clean.
Yours for postage if you want it.

OK thanks. So it's a 3 speed unit then and you say that you've renewed the brushes without success. Did you buy them from Engineering Carbon Products Ltd. in Croydon? Was the commutator in good condition?

Simon

Yes you can fit a V6 fan to a diesel with a bit of rewiring. As mentioned the control boxes are completely different - the V6 just has relays and the diesel relays along with a circuit board to convert the PWM signal that is used to control it.

You can fit pretty much any fan you want to the diesels - many years ago when my fan failed I fitted a single speed fan from a Rover 25 that was laying around the garage as an emergency spare and it still works fine.

One thing to note, it is not uncommon for the circuit board in the control box to fail on the diesels, so if your fan checks out then the fault could be in the control box. I'm sure Mickyboy on here can supply a good used one.
