Hi Paul,

I doubt very much that your problem is the shoes. I'm still using the originals!

At the handbrake lever check the "compensator" device for damage and that the cable adjustment is reasonable.
Remove the drum/disc assembly, clean out the brake dust and lightly lubricate the handbrake shoe pivots with suitable grease.
Check the disc thickness and the condition of the drum surface and renew if necessary (when I did this, my handbrake suddenly dramatically improved).
Refit and adjust the shoes following the traditional method rather than that in the manual (which is less than satisfactory).

Simon

Sorry to hear of your problem Paul, and you will be aware of how difficult this can be to solve if you need help. I am sure someone will be able to answer your original question to advise you. Perhaps temporarily you could leave it in gear.

Good luck.

Ensure you back off the adjuster in the drum/disc housing before removal or you may rip the shoe retainer pins out from the backplate trying to force the drum/disc off.

I’m 60 miles north of you, bear in mind you may need discs, shoes, fitting kit and backplates if it’s worst case scenario, hopefully it would just need an adjustment!

MG Rover fitted TRW handbrake shoes and after market don't have the correct coefficient of friction so your car is likely to roll away down the hill with the handbrake applied ! I tried to fix my poor handbrake for years having to adjust them tight to scrape through the MOT . TRW shoes fitted as recommended by Jules and with a modified compensator the handbrake nearly puts my nose through the windscreen !

Wot Simon said! Unless you've had some sort of brake fluid leak, usually a good clean of the drum/shoes with brake cleaner then re-adjustment will sort it out. If you have the time/skills fit a Mini R53 compensator/cable - IMHO it's one of the best/cheapest/most effective mods for our cars.
There are very useful 'How to's' on here before you start tinkering - or have a nice drive and visit Trikey.

Default But.

Paul isn't in the best of health and if anyone can help him it will be a good deed done, if he was still up here I would have gone over to Liverpool to bail him out.

Looking at the posts , Trikey has tendered you an invitation and at 60 miles up the road from you I would send him a PM as I'm sure he will sort your handbrake
Without a strip down it is impossible to diagnose the cause but with the age of all the cars, it can be any thing from unbonded linings ,seized cables to rotten backplates . Also aged linings can be hard and glazed and aren’t as efficient Obviously the compensator issue is well documented. Hopefully will just need a good service
As for setting up on completion, like every drum brake set up ,you adjust the individual brake first ,then the cables to the lever .

Steve
