Attempted robbery
Last night persons unknown attempted to steal an old bore hole pump close to the house. They did not get very far as the pump is very heavy and attached to old metal pipes dropping to about 60 feet below ground. Today we had a digger on the farm and used it to take out the pump and the pipes. We have just had a night patrol from 'armed response' who will keep an eye out tonight, as the belief is that the baddies will be back with the proper tools. The pump had been protected by a concrete collar and this had been removed. How the villains thought they were going to lift the pump and take out the pipes defies belief. They only got as far as partially sawing through some of the very large bolts which had secured it to a concrete base. I took a couple of pics of the pump to give you an idea about it. We have put the old pump back in situ with a tracking device hidden inside as the police want to catch not only the crooks in the front line, but also the crooks at the other end of the chain. Scrap metal theft is big business.

I sent the photos to the Hilux forum in South Africa and it has been identified as a 'Kragkop' often used to replace a windmill and powered by a diesel engine with a fan belt. The part is called a National D8 Kragkop. You are welcome to google it Harry as I suspect you would have more of an understanding of it's engineering than I do.

Where you are is safe to bring up your family and I don't blame you at all Craig for not missing the life out here. The police did visit last night on patrol and there was no more trouble. |

What looked like a hand wheel to open and close a valve, is actually the drive wheel for the pump.
