dash mounted usb
I have seen dash mount usb connectors that plug into a usb but has anyone seen any anywhere that wire straight into the loom fo charging mobile phones etc so I can leave the cig lighter as a cig lighter
I dont really want one of these multi port cig lighter things mounted to the interior somewhere so thought about mounting a discrete usb charger somewhere Last edited by t5tart; 7th November 2013 at 11:39.. |

I have mounted a multi-port cigar lighter in the ash tray hard wired into the back of the cigar lighter but am planning replacing this with a multi - port USB charger and then routing the cables behind the dash to reach the various gadgets (iPod / Phone / Dash Cam)

The USB power standard is 5v and about 0.9 amp max. If the socket will be used for a USB device, I assume the socket should be powered via a voltage controller?

You can just use a normal (good quality though) single or twin port usb power adaptor that would normally plug into the cigar lighter socket. carefully remove the case and then wire from the connecting pins to the cigar lighter power feed, glue it on to the panel above the ashtray (after making a suitable hole). You may also want to add switch if yours is the type of cigar lighter that is always powered regardless of ignition on/off: due to the small drain that will still occur due to the voltage step down even when not in use.)
A more complicated arrangement can be arrived at using transistors, a relay, and a 5v usb cigar lighter adaptor, along with a project box and some wire. This is how I power my Raspberry Pi mp3 player, and as a side effect have a spare charging cable for my phone (when the ignition is on).
