Default Seized Wheel Nuts

Not sure is this is technical or sheer brute force !

I have one wheel nut seized on my Grid Spoke Alloy wheels. I have tried all the conventical methods. Loads of Plus Gas, a 17mm bolt removal socket which I ended up breaking the breaker bar. When I removed the other 4 they had not corroded themselves to the wheel they have just been tightened to within an inch of their life.

It looks like I am going to have to drill the remaining bolt out, but that is something I really do not want to do unless I really have to.

Anyone out there have any better suggestions.

Many Thanks

Take it to a tyre fitting place. They should be able to loosen it for you.

Put the other 4 wheel bolts back on (tight) which can sometimes take a bit of the the strain off the remaining stuck wheel bolt.

I’ve had to resort to a 6ft length of pipe over a 2 ft breaker bar in the past myself.🙄

Do you know anyone with an impact gun?

I'm guessing this is the basis of the suggestion from Dave about taking her to a tyre place.

I "invested" in an 18V impact gun a little while ago for some front suspension work and it removed the front hub nuts as if they weren't there and they're specced at (I think - without looking it up) 350Nm which is way more than the road wheel bolts. I'm not even sure that the wheel bolts would take that kind of torque.

Good Luck.

Start off by giving the seized bolt head a good clumping with a drift and lump hammer.

Thats exactly where I was coming from. The only trouble with using a 6 foot tube on a 2 ft breaker bar is you can bend your breaker bar unless it’s a good one. Don’t ask how I know.

See if there is anyone locally with a torque multiplier, mine has saved the day quite a few times over the years.

Thanks gents, loads of options. I am having a new tyre fitted and I spoke to the Tyre bay about the issue and they reckon they should be able to shift the stubborn nuts. Let's hope so. watch this space for updates.

I tried all the above at home with a locking wheel nut where the key appeared to be stripped. Tyre centre got it off immediately with their impact wrench. Good luck.
