Quite like to see how this pans out. Coming through the FBI, not necessarily always noted for thoroughness and careful judgement, although they use the caveat ‘with most of them located (my bold) in Nigeria’, it seems curiously linked to other current US offshore shenanigans. Other origins are hinted at so conclusions may be a bit previous. While the mind boggles at examples of the naivete (sorry, no umlaut on this box) of victims, I suspect a high percentage will be elderly – even more cruel.

I could go on and on about the vagaries of International Aid, with specific countries in particular. Suffice it to say the Aid, or bribe, is usually thought to be in return for something; either a material gain or diplomatic favour. However, most of it seems to be entirely because of the 'me too' agreement of a stupid decision to guarantee it at a set % of GDP. No matter what!

When I did agency work for the Home Office, I had the task of escorting Nigerian criminals with mental illness back to Lagos. By the time I became involved, they had exhausted all of their appeals to stay. HM government had deemed them as either overstayers or not fit to remain in the UK because of their past crimes. On my last trip to Lagos I had to meet with the Drugs Police in Lagos, who asked me if I could get them a job with British Airways at the airport. I had a Group 4 security guard with me and he said “promise them everything, give them nothing”. I am not made that way. I guess his words of guidance, meant well, but breaking promises with the Nigerian police is dangerous and foolish, whilst some fraudsters see their activities as an honest living, in Nigeria it will always be there. I was interviewed by the SS - the Nigerian secret police who asked me for a bribe. Charity at home does matter, but so does compassion..

Hi.

My new wife is Kenyan and she tells me of the corruption in Kenya......... it is certainly one of the better places but even so corruption is rife.

One Pastor I'm friendly with comes from Zimbabwe and during a drought some years ago there was Maize on sale that was Aid for Kenya........ it was repacked and sold in Zimbabwe for profit. Again corruption either by the aid charities or governments.

Entirely the basis of my earlier posts. As ever, innocent and 'ordinary' citizens suffer the consequences of corruption beyond their control - and beyond their means. The 'Aid' is largely funding villas and yachts.

How is married life treating Judy and yourself Trevor? Rather well I hope

I can’t seem to shake off the shingles which has now erupted inside the back of the throat. I am on antivirals and drugs for the pain, hopefully the pills will pull me out of it.

Here is another story about corruption at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya. A friend related this to me, he is a British CEO of a pharmaceutical company in Kenya.

On exit at the immigration desk, the clerk said “your visa has expired! Behind me over my shoulder, is a camera and in my draw I have a stack of envelopes. Over there is a toilet. I will give you the envelope and with it, you must go to the toilet and place £200 inside the envelope and very carefully, pass it back out of view of the camera. If you do that, I will stamp your passport and you can be on your way. If you don’t, you won’t be getting on the plane anytime soon. It will be several days before you can get your passport stamped with a new visa and you will miss your flight”....So blatant!

Nigeria: Group 4 security staff warned me about Lagos. I was told to take plenty of cigarettes, spirits, wine and chocolates in my flight bag for bribes and to ask the flight crew to give me a bag of miniatures and what ever happens, don’t leave your passport and tickets out of your sight.

When I was interviewed by the SS, the main one, took me to one side at check in and told me how her daughter was getting married at the weekend, she added how the wine and spirits for the reception are expensive. Then she asked to see my tickets and passport.

I said “where are you going with those? they are mine, I am going with you. She said “OK, I am taking you over to the club lounge, the A/C is broken, wait there to be called for your flight.....

I am confiscating the contraband you are carrying”. You are lucky that I like you. The SS official was so laid back about it all. It felt as though it was an every day event for her, her lines sounded pompous and rehearsed. Despite the smiles, her eyes were black and cold like that of a shark. She had the wine and chocolate— Turkish Delight out of my bag, in fact she took the fags and the bag of miniatures. I sincerely hope she didn’t eat or drink too much when she got home

The answer to corruption is not to play the game and not to pay them anything. I wonder if corruption goes on in the UK and how people deal with it?

Hi Phil.
Married life with Judy is great, she is so attentive and loving, she's a great cook too and has introduced me to many new foods.

In a previous relationship she had in Nairobi she was with a guy that is a government official these days and is under surveillance for fraud equivalent to £10m here. Nice guy on the face of it but corrupt.

Hi Trevor, thank you for replying so quickly. It’s good to hear everything is going well and working out for you both. It was astute of Judy to pull herself out of getting involved with a corrupt official.

In all the years of my global travels, I would say, there are more good people in the world than there are bad. In Kenya, some of the people in government are not at all corrupt. There are indeed some very kind and genuine people in Kenya to be found.

In 2016 I was awarded a Kenyan Citizenship, whilst still being able to hold onto my UK passport, I didn’t have to give it up. The application process took 3 years and in all that time, not once was I asked to pay a bribe to jump the queues, neither was it offered. But the official fee to pay for the stamp is £5000. Not a bribe but it is a money earner for the government.

In January this year I received a demand from the Kenyan Inland Revenue for 40,000, the equivalent of £400. I got an accountant involved who has a friend working for the Revenue in their main office. I was told I had to pay it otherwise I would be fined. I paid my dues and that was the end of the matter. No extras were paid to either the accountant or the contact in the revenue. Their services were free and I was impressed by their generosity.

The KE government are trying to get to grips with corruption and they have a department called “ Graph” dedicated to investigating and prosecuting offenders with a freephone number for members of the public to phone in and report the baddies. We have a cousin who has just retired from being the CEO of a Stock Exchange. She told me how during a work visit to Nigeria, she was offered a gold Rolex as a gift, something she had to refuse for obvious reasons.
