Default Diesel not starting

Hi, I’ve searched the Forum for a non starting issue with my friends 2002 ZT CDTi but can’t find a similar issue. I have copied below the symptoms he is experiencing

Having an intermittent issue with starting. I insert and turn key all lights come on and then turn key at which point everything goes dead, engine fails to turn over no noise what so ever everything is dead. Keep trying and eventually the engine engages. Has anyone experienced this problem?

The only thing I can think of is a dodgy earth from the starter motor. Any advice would be gratefully received as he loves the car but the other half wants rid and a nearly new car purchased instead

Thanks

John

Sounds like a battery terminal issue, check clean and refit battery connections. If not that check condition of the earth to body strap in front of the battery box and check the main wire to starter for tightness. Good luck. Lee.

When you say the ‘engine engages’, do you mean it starts? If you mean that the starter engages, but the car does not start, then it could mean the battery is dead.

Your friend needs to be wary of repeated attempts to start the car if the battery is dodgy, can throw the immobiliser chip in the key out of sync and render the key useless. Read this if you haven't already: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=106447

Thank you, that is worrying reading.

I know when it first played up again recently (it had same issue a couple of times a year ago, but when it went into the local MGR specialist it didn't misbehave again and they couldn't find anything wrong) I know when the RAC came out, the battery had been flattened. I am seeing him tonight and will get the full details. The car has since restarted, would I be right in thinking that he was lucky and the immobiliser has not become unsynced ?

If it starts then the key is OK.

Tell your friend he must charge his battery for at least 24 hours.

If he has a charger that puts up a green light to say the battery is charged after only a few hours tell him to ignore it.

If the battery is flat and the green light comes up after just a few hours this normally indicates the battery is close to the end of its working life.

Big John,

Have you fixed this? When you say "everything goes dead", does that include the warning lights which previously illuminated?

Simon
