Hi all
I'm thinking of bidding on a 1.8t saloon on the bay. Stated that the car has a problem - will not start when hot, but when started drives fine. My research suggests that this should be a faulty camshaft sensor. Is is likely to be anything more sinister? I ask because I currently drive a diesel and know zip about the 1.8t.

Faulty crankshaft sensor - when you turn her over does the speedo move or not - if not its likely a failing crankshaft sensor. Assuming dash lights on and starter turning OK.

Beyond that when you start her can you here the humming of the fuel pump - also early cars can have starting problems due to fuel filter syndrome - fuel filter under passenger drivers side coming apart and not delivering enough fuel on starting -easy fix though with the fabled orange clip (FOC) - two or three pounds to buy.

A warm engine starting problem is likely to be the crankshaft and maybe the camshaft sensor. Later petrol models should be fitted with the orange clip as a matter of course. If you buy the car, check if one's fitted and if not fit one. Without the filter clip, it will leave you in the lurch sooner or later.


And be prepared to administer ongoing TLC. Fix coolant leaks and do pre-journey checks every time.

Just to confirm that it is the later models , 2002'ish onwards , that have the fuel filter problem

There's a few late 01's with it too. But there was no specific VIN point, so pot luck around the year change. If in doubt always take a look. Don't put it off, it will let you down eventually.

Camshaft sensor ???????

I saw the car in question on eBay the other day. I'd probably have a bid if I hadn't just bought another... can't be anything too complex but I was weary about it. A simple hot start issue can easily be sorted, I suspect this car has underlying issues and I'd expect it to cost more than a sensor to sort, otherwise they would likely have fixed it. I could be wrong though...

I think that you are probably correct. Also MOT has just expired.
