Sounds like one of the speed resistor has failed. With the aircon off, start the car and press the demist button. If the fan doesn't come on, then the low speed has failed.

Hello Derek and to the club and to Rover 75 ownership.

Basically the radiator fan should operate continuously whenever the air conditioning is running. With a few rare exceptions, this is whenever you have 'Auto' mode selected on your heater/air con. control panel.

The simple test you've requested is to press the 'Econ' button on the heater/air con. panel. If the fan continues to run then it will be cooling the engine. After a minute or two it should stop. If it doesn't, you may have a problem.

I hope this clarifies and please come back if you have more questions.

Simon

At least your sorted.

As you are the new owner of a 1.8 always check the slow speed fan is working - known as the "demist test" to make sure the resistor has not failed. As advised at post 2 by Suzublu.

The original silver fan (11 o clock on the fan mounting as you look through the RHS of your grill) resistor is a fail point and most folk upgrade to the more reliable gold resistor ( you will see them being sold on E bay )
