Dreaded thread revival!!! Well folks, I'm four years (approx) further down the line. I have had a 1.8 Conny for most of that time. I have never had a breakdown with it. It had a precautionary head gasket and cambelt change when I bought it and just annual servicing. A knee injury has made me seek out my 2.0 V6 automatic and I love it. Petrol is my choice due to my relatively low annual mileage. I'm still seeing a lot of oil burner problems on the forum???

I guess it comes down to priorities, and likes and dislikes. I've driven mainly diesels for years, Peugeot-Citroen, VAG, and now Rover/BMW. (I also currently own a 1991 Mitsubishi diesel auto 4x4). I've had a Renault 19 16v and a MGFvvc, and loved them for their free-revving verve on winding country roads and engine note. But as a daily, long distance commuter, the ability of the Rover to eat the miles at high motorway speeds, when you can't hear the engine, and to arrive relaxed, and without the discomfort of the Audi (The Renault and MGFs seats are far better, but the Rover's are supreme), not to mention the 45+ mpg and £195 tax, it is hard to beat. If you can afford the running costs of a V6, and a beautiful noise is your priority, - then put on your Neil Diamond CD!

Add an lpg kit and you have better than diesel economy, clean hands, and you can take or leave the Neil Diamond CD. And for those doubters who will allways find reasons "it can't be true", 100 thousand miles in 4 years, one set of plugs (to replace the originals at 130k), a pair of filters and one failed liquid solenoid later. To be fair the solenoid positioning isn't good, just under the floor by my throttle foot.

I just prefer the power delivery of a diesel engine and the lazy motorway cruising.

They have been known to snap but it isn't common fortunately.
There's been another couple of members on here that it's happened to

I had LPG on the Renault (Cabriolet).Loved that car. Need my head examining for selling it! Brilliant engine, still smooth and quiet after 140k miles. Got rid in a fit of pique when the alternator gave out half way to Portsmouth from Penrith.

Guys who used to service my 1.8 had this to say (both were ex Rover/MG mechanics and both drove 75's)

1.8/1.8T - Easiest of the bunch to maintain and if necessary do major work

V6 - Not so easy to maintain and more expensive to do major work

Diesel - Mid way between the two but filthy horrible things to work with
