Adjuster nut - Handbrake lever
Again, I've found another bodge on the Firefrost that now needs sorting for MOT time.
The adjuster nut on the handbrake lever has been over tightened and will not undo from the short handbrake cable, so I can't get the handbrake adjusted properly as this has led to stretching of the compensator which will also need fixing. I'm guessing the only way to sort this is to remove the interior and handbrake lever assembly to cut the nut of, and replace it along with the short cable. Thanks in advance for any quicker remedial options. Ben. |

Have you tried holding the end of the cable with mole grips while you try and undo the nut?

double nut the end of the adjuster thread and then hold it with the double nut, then you will be able to undo the original nut with an open ended spanner

Thanks both.
I thought the threaded section of the short cable was located in the handbrake lever with a four side section to stop it rotating, so don't think the stud is rotating? I was hoping that with the handbrake applied, the pressure would push the nut back up the stud, but it won't pick up the thread in either direction. |

I have drilled down the side of nut and removed some that way, when they have been tightened down by
1 Once the nut is tightened onto the shoulders of the cable they are hard to back off as the alloy washer just spins on the collar, 3mm drill will do the job.

When this happened on mine I just bit the bullet and got a replacement short cable from Rimmers.
I also had to buy a pair of cable cutters, and I also got some replacement nuts. The original nut is very tight, but the replacements are easy to turn with fingers. As yet it hasn't shaken loose. I also put a few washers onto the thread so I wouldn't overtighten the nut again.

do not cut the cable as they where nla new.one i bought years ago did not have the square section end which meant it just rotated .or if you do cut it consider fitting the mini compensator which can be supplied with a new front cable which it needs with it.
