Just a thought, Have you tried looking for an alternative Insurance quote? One with a limited mileage applied might work out a lot less.

Cool

My late father in law packed up driving at the age of 90 as he was going deaf, plus he was a danger on the road in his Mark 2 Ford Escort.

I would say going for a driving update with a driving school is the last thing you want if the ‘teaching’ is anything to go by where I live. I am 80 years young at the moment, and if I wanted to find out if I was still competanto still drive, I would be asking an advanced driving instructor to give me a whirl to see if I was past it.
I will find it a soul destroying event when I have to pack up driving, so I know how you feel. Good luck.

Excellent replies on here. It amounts to your own confidence in your abilities to navigate today's driving conditions. I'm not far off your predicament and, given the affordability and necessity of personal transport, I would take an assessment by a professional, if only for an unbiased view.

I occasionally imagine a road sign saying 'Well, how do you think that 20 miles went?'
If you have a dash cam, play it back to yourself weekly/monthly and give yourself a cold verdict.
Milestones are merely measurements, you can always make the travelling between them safe and comfortable. Your own conscience will dictate if you give it a chance.

On a lighter note, I would hate to confirm the prejudices some other drivers have about R75 drivers. I don't want to drive in the modern idiom, I want to drive like we used to. Like allowing others who have what used to be called 'right of way' when parked cars cause three-lane traffic with oncoming cars in two lanes, and when we used to allow converging traffic to enter in front of us rather than pretending we hadn't seen them, and many others. Good luck.

That was my thoughts exactly, my old man is in his late 70's, my mother is 80 and gave up driving a couple of years ago due to arthritis.

My dad still drives around 4000 miles P.A..so it's still a viable proposition to own a car, but 300 miles a year? I'd say taxi every time

Some good advice there on both sides of the coin.
I agree that you should make up your own mind (Says the 63 year old whippersnapper!)
My dear old departed Dad drove a massive Chrysler LeBaron which he loved to polish and keep ship-shape. The car started showing mysterious dings and scrapes, and eventually he was nicked for damaging another car in the supermarket parking lot. It was getting scary driving with him and my wife eventually had his doctor talk him into turning in his license. The poor guy was heartbroken. Even though he didnt drive a lot the loss of freedom really took a toll on him.
I guess my point is, you should make your own decision when to stop driving, just try not to make it too early or late.

I thank you all for your useful comments.
I am confident in my driving I have never had a serious accident and no-one has ever been even slightly injured due to my driving.
Thought about the £600 for insurance, thats £50 a month. Then realised my wife spends £80 a month on her hair (more if a perm is involved) which puts my insurance into a much better perspective.
Have decided to keep going for at least another year.
But I will speak to insurer and try to get it reduced.
Must admit it is great to have the freedom to come and go as I please.
Terry

Have a chat with a local driving school. They will give you an unbiased assessment of your driving. If they are happy and you are happy, carry on. However, if you have any doubts or you think that the expense isn't worth it, for the small amounts of travel that you are doing, a few taxi fares will be neither here or there. I've told my family to take the keys off me if they think that I'm not fit to drive. Better safe than sorry in my opinion.

Default Time to stop driving

Two years ago when I was 79 I put in for the Institute of Advanced Driving Test and passed. I had failed the test when I was in my late forties! You could arrange to have an assessment test at, I think, a small fee which might help you decide whether to carry on driving or not.
