I suspect it might be pleaded that the deaths were due to other causes not related to the frequency of refuge areas.

If nobody drove a vehicle, there would be no accidents/collisions. We were all taught to drive and anticipate, ultimately, if one drives into a zone they cannot see to be clear, they are at fault. If a vehicle on the hard shoulder or any other part of a road is hit, fair investigation should be made, but if one drives into a giant hole, then why blame someone else?

anyone that watched the Panorama program should also watch the channel 5 program.

Panorama, refuges at 2 1/2 miles, channel 5 1 1/2? miles.
Panorama smart motorways are dangerous, channel 5 they are safe.

How come they were on the same day? coincidence?

Who ever thought this insane and utterly moronic idea should have been locked up for plain stupidity until the legal system had time to decide what to actually charge him/her with!!!
Smart motorways? What's smart about them!

Smart motorways are im guessing th cheapest option to maximise there potential. Th out come is taken into "there account" … Iv driven 31 years commercially so nothing surprises me at all what goes on and witnessed things I wish id never seen. Driving is a very dangerous thing to do indeed.. I feel for th poor families. They suffer th most...

When on the motorway I never travel on the hard shoulder even if it states you can, don't trust the so called smart motor, as always it as been done on the cheap, how much more would it have cost to add an extra lane to our motorways thus creating a 5 lane system, I am sure it would have cost a lot less than HS2

I noted on the programme that the now transport MP had read the how to get out of a question book from front to back, slimy person do not like him at all, they are not listening to the groups that count ie AA, RAC, the MP whom is a now Lord whom allowed the first smart motorway M42 now says they are not fit for purpose, why does eh the transport MP need a study taken it's right in front of him

Stick him in a broken down car for the minimum time it states to get to a broken down car 30 minutes on the hard shoulder & lets see how he reacts to all the HGV ploughing down on him in that time, never mind normal cars & vans.

How long before a massive pile up occurs? then you will get we are learning from our mistakes but they never do, my two penny worth over.

Several questions,

What will be done when the so called Smart Motorways are actually completely full and at a permanent stop? Start building a new network elsewhere?

Has anyone else noted that the hazard lights on cars are totally useless in daylight and little better after dark?
